Dozens nabbed in blitz

29 Jun, 2005 08:50 PM
DOZENS of truck drivers were caught flouting the law during a three-month blitz across the region's roads.

In a campaign funded by the Transport Accident Commission, police from the Bendigo Traffic Management Unit have been focusing on the heavy vehicle industry.

Since March, police have checked 281 trucks and 269 semi trailers, with 42 truck drivers caught breaking the law.

Bendigo TMU Acting Sergeant Kevyn Hume-Cook said log book offences, such as not recording full driving details, were the most common concerns detected during the blitz.

Unregistered heavy vehicles and failure to carry safety equipment were among other offences detected.

Sgt Hume-Cook said the proper completion of log books was vital within the transport industry, given the dangers of fatigue.

"It is particularly important truck drivers who are driving with much heavier loads don't fall asleep at the wheel."
