TROPICAL conditions produced a massive downpour across Bendigo yesterday, when almost 16mm of rain fell in just over an hour.Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said about one third of Bendigo’s November rainfall fell between 12.30pm and 2pm, causing flash flooding across the city.“The humid conditions brought rain and scattered thunderstorms in Bendigo and across central Victoria,” he said.“The heavy rain and quick downpour are synonymous with tropical weather.”Mr Carlyon said further heavy rain, which would come from the Mallee, was expected.“This could also bring large hail and strong winds and we could see as much as 30 to 50mm.“Late tonight and early Saturday morning should bring another rainband with the potential to drop between 10 and 20mm.“There will be showers right across the weekend, but next week should bring fine dry weather for most of the week,” Mr Carlyon said. The heavy rain produced flash flooding across Edwards Road in Jackass Flat, where Eaglehawk CFA was called to assist.Edwards Road resident Anneliese Fischer said she was surprised how quickly the rain came down.“I’ve seen a few downpours, but I haven’t seen anything like this before,” she said.“I’m drenched to the bone.”The conditions also brought headaches for the CFA with rain and lightning causing four false-alarm call outs. CFA region 2 operations officer John Cutting said crews also attended a fire at Barkers Creek after a tree was struck by lightning at 1pm.
