 D-DAY FOR QEO

D-DAY FOR QEO

27 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
CITY of Greater Bendigo councillors must decide tomorrow night whether to allocate $800,000 of federal government funding to upgrade the Queen Elizabeth Oval.

The $800,000 federal government funds need to be spent by December 31, next year.

A report, which will be presented to councillors, recommends the money be earmarked for the trouble-plagued QEO surface upgrade.

“Council has resolved to upgrade this surface to a standard that can accommodate local, state and, at times, national competition,” the report said.

“Unfortunately there is a perception within the community that the main motivation in pursuing this upgrade is to accommodate the standards required for VFL competition.

“This is clearly not the case.

“An upgrade is necessary because of the deteriorating state of the soil profile and is needed irrespective of any level or standard of competition.

“It is strongly contended that the main beneficiaries of these works will in fact be the local competitions and the local community.

“It should be noted that endeavours are being made to obtain a contribution from the local football community and this will offset the council commitment.”

The council’s 2010/2011 budget provides for a total allocation of $2 million, with a contribution of $1.5 million from state and federal governments.

The federal government funding would be used for excavating existing soil, removing existing irrigation infrastructure, installation of a drainage system and building the root base.

In June the federal government rejected the council’s application for $1.5 million of funding and the council allocated $500,000 of its budget to resurfacing the ground.

Lets see if this council will do some thing for the people and not the minority , The Qeo is a fantastic oval been lets go in to a state of disrepair. Spend the money and for Once do something the ratepayers want. The councilors will be shaking as they have to actually make a decision.. My bet goes to another consultation report or study of some kind so they can postpone the works

Isn't this the same ground that had a new surface only a couple of years ago? If it is not to pander to the VFL why does it need another upgrade, tell the truth for once. Once again this council can't get a thing right more of "our" money to be wasted if it gets the vote, which I am sure it will. I would rather the money be spent on footpaths, street lighting or roads.

Correction! The $800,000 is really the Australian peoples money! Why is the Federal Labor government 'dishing it out' with a restriction as to when the money must be expended! Oh! it just so happens it is an election year. And the sitting Labor member does not really have a huge margin. COGB and Councillors, take the money, add the COGB ratepayers money you have now, or will be receiving in rates. Get the job done properly once and for all. But please ensure it is done properly without cost over runs.
