A CASTLEMAINE woman is pulling out all stops to make her mother’s lifelong dream come true.Peta Masters is drumming up votes for her 89-year-old mum, Jo, who is an entrant in the UK’s Oldie Composers’ Songwriting competition.Jo lives in Barkingside, London, but Ms Masters is rallying international support and has been busy posting flyers around Castlemaine.“Mum wants to be published by the time she turns 90,” Ms Masters said.“We’ve got until her birthday, June 26, to make it happen.“What I would love if is I could find someone to sing her songs – to record them – so more people can hear them.“It’s something she’s always done and she’s put so much in to it.”Ms Masters’ Canadian sister spotted songwriting competition in a magazine.Jo entered five songs and one of her pieces, House of Tears, has made the shortlist at number 18.“There was another one that I wish they’d chosen called Make No Waves,” Ms Masters said.“It was about refugees so it would have been lovely.“But House of Tears is also lovely, all of her songs are.”Ms Masters said her mum’s been writing songs all her life.“She’s pretty remarkable actually,” she said.“She went in to show business very early. She was in films as a child and played piano from the time she was four years old.“Now with her arthritis it’s not so easy but she still plays.”Ms Masters grew up humming her mum’s tunes instead of popular music.“Looking back at it that was quite strange,” she said.“It’s just what we grew up with. She had a dancing school and taught tap and ballet to small children.“She also wrote a musical adaptation of ‘What Katy Did’.“She’s been entertaining people her whole life.”The Oldie Composers’ Songwriting competition is a fundraiser for Barnado’s children’s charity.“It’s an old for young type thing,” Ms Masters said“My father’s 92 and he and my mother still live together in a little cottage.“It’s just opposite Dr Barnado’s so it would be a lovely symmetry if she won the competition.”• People can listen to Jo’s music at www.youtube.com/user/croozyVideo or vote for House of Tears at www.croozy.com/jo Click on the grey ‘click to vote’ logo on the bottom left of the home page.
