THE completion of the new Chinese precinct will be the biggest project for the City of Greater Bendigo in 2010 according to the City’s mayor.
Cr Rod Campbell said the $4.6 million Dai Gum San precinct will take the cake as the most high-profile achievement.
“It is a very exciting project, it will increase the number of visitations to the area and it will raise the profile of the whole precinct, which I think is quite remarkable,” Cr Campbell said.
The Mayor also said that with State and Federal elections due, the council would be jostling for funding on a raft of projects.
“We will be jostling for funding and we will be pushing for a full commitment on the hospital,” Cr Campbell said.
He said the council would also lobby hard for funding for the arts precinct upgrade.
The Mayor is hopeful the controversial Hargreaves Mall redevelopment will finally be finished.
“I’m also looking forward to securing funding for the O’Keefe Rail Trail and we will be continuing to seek funding for water security,” he said.
The Mayor said some major traffic intersections would be the focus of upgrades and reviews, which would require co-operation with other governments.
He pointed to the intersection of the Calder Highway and Calder Alternate as a significant area needing attention.
“We will be pushing on in areas of economic development and with our research and planning for the Marong Business Park.
“This is an essential part of our strategies about providing future employment, employment security and industrial opportunities,” Cr Campbell said.
Earlier this month The Advertiser reported the Carter family whohave lived on a property in Marong for 90 years may be kicked off to make way for a huge business park.
Council will also make a decision on whether it will purchase the historic Fortuna Villa.
