Council to vote on new rates

CITY of Greater Bendigo councillors will vote on the 2010-11 budget tonight with a rate rise of 4.5 per cent on the way.The report that will be presented to the council includes alterations to projects due to additional funding of $300,000 from Regional Development Victoria for the Wes Vine Hall and $18,000 needed to buy detachable projection screens for Hargreaves Mall.The proposed budget sets aside $2.16 million for the next stage of planning for the Edward Street car park, including initial construction works.The draft budget was approved by the council in May. At the time Mayor Rod Campbell said it was a fair budget that would be welcomed by the community.“Four point five per cent across the board is very reasonable and a low increase in rates.” The council is also proposing to increase the municipal charge from $124 to $129.60. The garbage charge for a 240-litre bin goes from $168 to $188 and the garbage charge for a 120/140-litre bin from $95 to $110.Residents with a home valued at $250,000, the current average house value in Greater Bendigo, who have a small 120/140-litre garbage bin will receive an annual rates bill of $1106.70.A home valued at $350,000 will receive an annual rates bill of $1431.70.Bendigo is proposing its biggest capital works program in five years with $48.7 million set aside for major works.The big winners in the 2010-11 draft budget include the Bendigo Airport with $1.2 million allocated, $2.2 million for a pavilion at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve and a further $1.3 million for Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve.
