Council to make decision on extra Bendigo Stadium pokies

26 Sep, 2011 01:02 PM
ALMOST 90 people have objected to a planning permit to install more poker machines at Bendigo Stadium.

City of Greater Bendigo councillors will decide on the planning permit on Wednesday night.

CoGB officers have recommended councillors refuse the planning permit.

The 88 objectors argue 30 more poker machines at Bendigo Stadium would have a detrimental social and economic impact on the community.

They also argue the increase in machines would not deliver a net benefit for the community or meet the council’s gaming framework of “accessible but not convenient”.

Bendigo Stadium officials want the additional poker machines to help pay for a new stand-alone arena.

The additional poker machines would take the stadium’s total to 105.

Stadium officials argue a new arena would help the city attract premier sporting events to the city.

The Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation this month approved Bendigo Stadium’s application for additional poker machines, which the council refused to support.

How can they reject something going into a building that we as ratepayers own and the COGB look after? This would have to be a double standard, but then we are talking about the COGB.
