Council consider options after Castlemaine pokies decision

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
MOUNT Alexander Shire Council says it is looking at all legal avenues to contest the approval of 65 new poker machines in Castlemaine.

Councillors and council staff met legal representatives yesterday afternoon to discuss the next step they would take in response to the approval of new poker machines.

Mayor Janet Cropley said the council was considering appealing to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

“We have the option of pursuing it further,” she said.

“We’ve met with community groups, including Enough Pokies In Castlemaine, and they’re

pretty clear about where they’re at.”

Cr Cropley said the Maryborough Highland’s Society plan for 65 new machines in a railway shed development was opposed by the majority of the community.

But she said it would be difficult to gain ongoing support to continue a legal battle.

“At this stage it looks like the votes will be split between councillors,” she said.

“We didn’t have a unanimous vote on the last challenge so it might be very difficult to get more support. Without an enormous expenditure, we need to be clear that our legal people have grounds for appeal.”

The council will meet next Tuesday to decide whether it will appeal to VCAT.

It's all just one huge gamble with rate payers money isn't it?

I really dont know how they came to the conclusion that the majority of residents are against this. As a resident working in the biggest employer in castlemaine i know a lot more people that are for it than against. We want the town to move forward not backwards. And creating jobs cant be a bad thing. Its not compulsory to go there.

Mayor Cropley talks about what the majority of our town wants. What the majority wants is for Mayor Cropley to do the honest thing and withdraw the money grab she's imposing on the Castlemaine CWA. Instead she wants to waste money on more VCAT appeals and pool plans the majority don't want and which the town doesn't need and can't afford!

Where, oh, where are some original Castlemaine people who want only what is best for the town? How come such a FEW people are having the say on the pokies? I agree with Castlemaine resident MOST people one talks too, are NOT against the pokies, it will bring jobs and money into the town. If the 600 AGAINST people can't behave themselves around pokies, simple stay away from them!!!!

The MHS give nothing back in Kyneton (as stated in the Commission hearing) because there is no profit. What makes anyone think the Cstlemaine Club will be any different?

Both the Maryborough Highland Society and the Council polled hundreds of residents - enough to obtain a good statistical result - and the clear majority of residents surveyed opposed this development.

I'm getting a little tired of the minority trying to distort this irrefutable fact.

An independent hearing at VCAT was always the plan for both parties and I am hopeful Council will complete the process.

Never forget, the VCGR reported last week that this development will cause social detriment in the Shire.

Mayor Cropley; how can you say the majority of the community are against pokies when only 650-700 people of a population of around 7000 were surveyed? Perhaps the silent majority want them? Don't use my ratepayers money to fight this......not until we have a clear view what the community really want!

Ballarat has been given the go ahead to put in another 50 of these money grabbers also, looks like since Julias backflip to Wilkie the floodgates are opening and more and more of the Money Grabbers are about to cash in on the addicted.

Shameful, no other word for it, and those who say it creates jobs, I ask, at what price?
