CITY of Greater Bendigo Council has commemorated well-known Strathfieldsaye locals, naming a new walking and cycling trail alongside Sheepwash Creek after the Coman family.
Mayor David Jones said the Coman Trail had come about after a request from Strathfieldsaye and District Community Enterprise.
Brian Coman and his brother, Ernie, were both involved in Landcare in the Strathfieldsaye area, particularly along the Sheepwash Creek.
Brian and Merilyn Coman recently sold part of their property next to the new Strathfieldsaye Recreation Reserve, to the council for passive recreation use and the next section of the trail.
"The Coman Trail is important," Cr Jones said.
"When it's completed, it will link housing areas in the Guys Hills Road area of Strathfieldsaye to the township, school and local recreational facilities, without the need for pedestrians and cyclists to cross busy Strathfieldsaye Road.
"This is possible because the path will go underneath the bridge that crosses Sheepwash Creek on Strathfieldsaye Road," he said.
The completed section of Coman Trail runs from Club Court to the new Strathfieldsaye Recreation Reserve.
The next stage - from the new recreation reserve to Guys Hill Road - is due to start this financial year.
"When the next section is complete, the trail will be 1.5 kilometres long and will provide an excellent off-road connection to the Strathfieldsaye township," Cr Jones said.
The project aligns with Bendigo's cycling and walking path strategy and is jointly funded by Council and Strathfieldsaye Community Enterprise.
