COLIBAN Water will start testing an Eaglehawk sewage pipe on Hopkins Avenue from today.
The site has been identified as a problem area in the sewer network, according to Coliban Water general
manager of planning and infrastructure Dharma Dharmabalan.
''We have experienced intermittent sewage odour in some areas of our Marong/Maiden Gully sewer
age system, particularly those in close proximity to the Hopkins Avenue sewerage pump station in Eaglehawk,'' Dr Dharmabalan said.
The testing could last for up to five days with odour monitors at four sites along the pipeline.
Dr Dharmabalan said there were a number of factors that contributed to sewage system smells.
''Essentially, sewage within the pipe system is moving slowly to our wastewater treatment plant facili
ties in Epsom.
''This is due to a combination of factors such as the distance sewage needs to travel before reaching the
treatment plant, some sections of the pipeline being gravity fed and the greater use of grey water by
customers in times of water restrictions,'' Dr Dharmabalan said.
Customers have been provided with odour diaries to track days of bad smells.
''The results from these investigations will be used to develop a more effective odour removal system for this section of our sewer system,'' Dr Dharmabalan said.
