Club owner lashes out at lockout

NIGHTCLUB owner David Cambridge has expressed his continued disappointment at the 2am lockout.Mr Cambridge said the policy meant clubs that had a 3am license had no chance of making money and accused authorities of offering false hope with the trial extensions.“The policy means owning a 3am nightclub in Bendigo is completely worthless,” he said.“If the lockout was 3am it wouldn’t affect us.”On June 13, The Advertiser reported that the 2am lockout would continue, with Director of Liquor Licensing Sue Maclellan offering a trail six-month, one-hour license extension to venues with a 3am closing time.Mr Cambridge, who owns the Huha nightclub, said the offer was just to keep vocal venue operators quiet.“The venues have been stitched up; we have had a carrot dangled in front of us.“It seems to me that the applications will be given a straight no, I cannot seeing her (Sue Maclellan) approving this for one second.”A spokesperson for Liquor Licensing said objections to the applications had been received that would require the applications to be heard by a panel before the Director of Liquor Licensing could consider them. The 2am lockout prohibits entry into any venue after that time. The 3am licensees believe this gives the 5am venues a distinct advantage.Mr Cambridge said people in Bendigo were now hitting the town later than before, meaning the window for his business to make money was about two hours for each of the three nights they open.“We have been open for five weeks and the crowds until 1am have been good, but as soon as 1am comes it is like a bus has rocked up and everyone leaves.”
