Claims emergency exit at Kyneton lures people to pokies

08 Feb, 2012 11:21 AM
A GROUP of protesters will meet at the Kyneton Bowling Club at 2pm today to rally against the venue's emergency exit door.

The group says the door is being used to give easier access to the poker machines inside.

Protest organiser Mary Reid said the door is luring people from the street to gamble.

Mrs Read wants the Maryborough Highland Society to make the door strictly an emergency exit.

"It's encouraging more people in off the street to use the poker machines," she said.

"We are concerned people are entering from the nearby libraries, playgrounds and supermarkets."

Maryborough Highland Society General Manager Malcolm Blandphorn said the entrance was not being used to draw people toward its poker machines.

"The door is being used as our main public entrance, which is easier for a lot of the elderly patrons," he said.

"And when you look from the outside all you can see is the hallway and not the pokie machines."

Mr Blandphorn said the venue had taken a responsible approach to looking after its members.

"I understand they're worried about kids going in there unattended, but we're a very responsible organisation. We would not let that happen."

The rally begins at 2pm outside the bowling club.

Get over it-

People dont play them unless they want too.

Yes Gambling is a big issue - but where is it different to ALCOHOL, CIGARETTES, HORSE RACING, TATTSLOTTO, SCRATCHIES--no one takes it on unless they want too-

People need to worry about the stuff in their own life and homes, before deciding whats right for others in thier homes. If clubs donate money to community groups how many of you would knock back a cheque to assist your club/group??

Re: cgull's comments.

It's a common misconception that there is no difference between pokies and other forms of gambling. But the truth is that pokie machines are programmed to lose. Any other form of gambling is prohibited from being fixed and comes with massive penalties if fixing is discovered. These machines are the scurge of society and the epitome of greed. Our governments are so addicted their judgement is affected just like any other addict. How long do we have to keep having this argument!!!

@ Sam - have you ever heard the phrase "the house always wins". ALL forms of gambling are programmed for the gambler to loose.

Oh dear!! I suppose the Kyneton Bowling Club has hired armed thugs to drag people in off the street to play the pokies?

I think these people should go and look for a different drum to beat.

Yet another example of the Maryborough Highland Society demonstrating quite plainly that they are after every dollar they can get, no matter how sordidly they obtain it. There is no excuse for admitting anyone to this venue in such a fashion, no matter what the "reason", and this is simple proof that they passively encourage non-members to "come in the back way" and gamble.

Shameful. Just shut the door.

If I lived over your way I help with the protest.Thankfully, so far our shires no Pokie stance has been adhered to. I trust the decision is no precedent in Vic, hope VEAC listens.

If it changes; re state govt weakness I'll be at the forefront to.

Shame Ted.
