City turns on charm for Queen’s Birthday

RESTAURANTS, accommodation providers and retailers are preparing for a busy few days as thousands flock to the region for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.City of Greater Bendigo director of city futures Stan Liacos said a smorgasbord of sporting events, car “show and shine” displays and art exhibitions was expected to bring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy.“We’ve seen an increase in the momentum of major events in the past few years,” Mr Liacos said.“These are a very real part of our economic development strategies - and they do bring considerable money into our economy.“Not only does it bring valuable economic stimulus to Bendigo, it also lifts our profile in Victoria and around Australia.”Thousands of sports fans will visit Bendigo for the Victorian Masters Softball Championships, Victorian Country Volleyball Championships, Inter-Regional Tennis Challenge and the 21st Bendigo Annual Oldtimers Ice Hockey Super Challenge.Admirers of fine cars and motorcycles are in for a special treat.The FB/EK Car Club Rally, Chrysler Car Club Rally and Ulysses Motor Cycle Club will showcase marvellous machines over the weekend.Other events expected to attract large crowds include local band Gladness performing at the Wine Bank on View, Heathcote on Show and the 2009 Archibald Prize at Bendigo Art Gallery.Council marketing and major events manager Leanne Rosewall said Bendigo’s reputation as a regional events centre continued to grow.“The City of Greater Bendigo’s strong commitment to building quality sporting and recreation venues and actively pursuing and attract a diverse range of events is paying big dividends.“Accommodation is at a premium across the city, and restaurants and retailers are gearing up to welcome thousands of visitors.“Bendigo is becoming known among event organisers as a great destination and for its ability to cater to a range of events.“We’re looking forward to a bumper weekend.”
