A FEDERAL Liberal politician has used a visit to Bendigo to call on the government to delay its childcare reforms.Opposition childcare and early childhood learning spokeswoman Susan Ley toured the Annie Galvin Childcare Centre yesterday. She spoke with staff and entertained the children during her visit.New federal rules require children to attend 15 hours a week of pre-school from next year. Ms Ley said she supported the 15 hours but wanted the government to delay its implementation until 2016.“The aim of 15 hours of pre-school is clearly a very good one,” she said.“The idea is good but in Bendigo we don’t have buildings or teachers and through my role that is very concerning.“I am here supporting childcare and families but we want an extension until 2016.” Ms Ley said she was impressed at Bendigo’s growth and was excited about its future. The NSW MP for Farrer is also the Coalition’s employment participation spokeswoman and toured Bendigo’s trades training centre. She said she wanted to break down a so-called “academic snobbery” mentality that looked down on people not attending university after school.
