CHARLTON residents stranded by the floods will know later today if it is safe to return home.
The Avoca River at Charlton down stream peaked at around 7.3 metres last night.
The bureau of meteorology is predicting the river will stay at seven metres today.
The Bendigo Red Cross has provided food and emergency accommodation at the Charlton relief centre.
The relief centre was set up on Monday afternoon at the Charlton College and Red Cross Emergency Services Coordinator for the Loddon Mallee Region Graham Etherton said the resilience of the town was clear.
The Red Cross had 23 people register with the organisation on Monday and eight residents stayed overnight.
Mr Etherton said they were providing food and bedding for residents forced to leave their home.
"It's clear that people are wanting to get on with things," he said.
"At the moment people are just after information of when they will be able to return home."
A public meeting will be held tonight at 7.30pm at the relief centre with representatives from council and the Department of Human Services to answer queries on what help might be available.
Meanwhile, V/Line has said due to flooding the Bendigo to Sea Lake coach service won't stop or pick up at Charlton.
V/Line will instead drop passengers attempting to get to Charlton at Wedderburn and due to road closures in the area will not be able to offer alternate transportation.
