Central Victorian army troops train for East Timor mission

18 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
ARMY Reserve soldiers in central Victoria yesterday negotiated an angry East Timorese mob before dealing with UN forces and tending to a man run over by a truck.

The scenario was one of the role-playing exercises soldiers have been training in ahead of their deployment to East Timor.

Simulated emergency incidents, as well as community patrols and riot control training, have formed part of an intensive three-month camp for soldiers at Puckapunyal military base, near Seymour.

A group of 200 soldiers from around Victoria, including six soldiers from Bendigo, will finish their final training exercises this week before heading off on an eight-month stability mission.

The group will be in East Timor at a volatile time ahead of the country’s elections on March 17.

The Bendigo Advertiser will have regular coverage of the Victorian soldiers before and during their deployment.

This will be a great opportunity for Reserves to show their Full-time companions their grit in a potentially strenuous environment. As they are part-time and exist in a 'normal' community environment- Bendigo, Castlemaine, etc- they are better suited for humanitarian work and the cultural / communal diversity that comes hand in hand. Good luck, we'll be watching !

at the end of 1999 when the East Timor's infrastructure was destroyed by the TNI, 5 army reservists from 15 Trp Tqn (Bendigo) were amongst the first to set foot into Dili. Within few months another 25 or so Bendigo Army reservists put all their civilian responsibilities on hold to help out with the urgent situaion in East Timor.

Reservists sacrifice thier spare time for the defence force.

Reservists go on active service as "choice"..not because their employer tells them to.

Reservists deserve respect.

If you do your job professionally you will be granted (not deserve) respect. If you stuff up you may be sent home and may disgrace the ADF, your unit and self. These soldiers are temporarily full time Australian International ambassadors now. This is longer than a 2 week exercise and more ardurous than a weekend.

Respect is neither earned or deserved. It certainly cannot be demanded. Respect is granted by those who desire to give respect. Stay safe, always do your job professionally, look after your mates and we will grant you respect.
