Castlemaine locals take pokies fight to Melbourne

13 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
A TWO-DAY hearing into Castlemaine poker machines has hardened the resolve of campaigners.

The Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation yesterday completed hearings into a proposed development in the Old Goods Shed in Kennedy Street.

“If anything our resolve is stronger now,” Enough Pokies in Castlemaine (EPIC)chairman David Stretch said.

“The committee, we all do this on a voluntary basis. We have taken two days away from work and away from our families to stay in Melbourne and attend the hearings.

“We have put a lot of heart and soul into this.”

The Maryborough Highlands Society is behind the push to bring more poker machines to Castlemaine.

But the Mount Alexander Shire Council refused to back the bid and made a submission at the hearings. A council phone survey of 400 residents found three quarters of respondents were against the proposal in November. Mr Stretch said the VCGR would decide on the application before February 5.

“We were reasonably pleased that there were about eight community members that were able to address the commission today,” he said yesterday.

“We remain unconvinced that two days was adequate enough to fully hear the evidence.”

Mr Stretch said EPIC was in the battle for the long run.

“We won’t stop until this thing is stopped,” he said.

Castlemaine need a venue where they can hear live music etc. The way things are going at the moment there will be no nightlife in Castlemaine whatsoever. The town is going backwards rather than keeping up with the times and a lot of blow in residents to the Shire fail to see that. Hope the highlands society gets this through which might just pave the way for progress for this town.

Don't agree Tim, it is the newcomers coming to Castlemaine who are boosting the local economy in a big way. They are starting businesses building houses renovating old ones and creating heaps of jobs for tradesmen and that has a flow on effect for local businesses. They have a big input to community groups and have skills that are useful for building better communities. If you knew Castlemaine 40 years ago it was in danger of becoming a ghost town and it was the people who came with new ideas that turned that situation around.
