A group of Castlemaine doctors say Mount Alexander Shire needs to do all it can to stop more poker machines hitting the town.
Five doctors from the Lyttleton Street Medical Clinic have written to the shire, warning that Castlemaine has enough poker machines.
The letter follows Maryborough Highland Society’s plans for 65 poker machines to be installed in an unused goods shed on state government land near the Castlemaine Railway Station.
Doctor Daniel Silver said the proposal was a blatant money making exercise to make money from people who were prepared to throw away their money.
“As GPs we see the collateral damage of problem gamblers, such as the financial pressures and the relationship breakdowns,” he said.
“The letter was sent to ask council to do whatever in its powers to minimise the number of pokies granted.
“I’m not for prohibition, but we need to limit access to pokies.
“There are already outlets in Castlemaine for people to use pokies. I don’t think we should be creating ways for young people to throw their money away.”
The Maryborough Highland Society has yet to lodge a planning application with Mount Alexander Shire Council.
Mayor Janet Cropley said the council was powerless to do anything until a planning application was lodged.
“The important thing is that people remember to object to this when a planning application is submitted,” she said.
“We’re very happy to hear the community’s voice.
“I think it’s indicative of growing community concern.” – clare quirk
