CENTRAL Victorians are being asked to call Crime Stoppers if they witness any deliberate or reckless lighting of fires this summer. The state government and Crime Stoppers launched the bushfire arson hotline summer campaign on Friday, asking people who live, work or visit bushfire-prone areas to phone Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.Experts believe that between 30 and 50 per cent of bushfires in Victoria are deliberately or recklessly lit.Two teenagers were committed to stand trial in November for allegedly lighting Bendigo’s Black Saturday bushfire, which killed one man and destroyed 61 homes.Acting Premier Peter Ryan said the community had a part to play to stop arsonists.“There must be a zero-tolerance approach to deliberately or recklessly lit fires in our state, which means taking action to catch arsonists before their criminal behaviour has devastating consequences,’’ he said.“Even the smallest piece of information may be the missing link an investigator is looking for, so a call to Crime Stoppers can be critical and may save lives.’’Mr Ryan said that between 30 and 50 per cent of bushfires in Victoria may be deliberately or recklessly lit, according to the Australian Institute of Criminology and the Monash Sustainability Institute. He said information to Crime Stoppers would be treated confidentially.Mr Ryan said people should watch out for people who showed a high interest in or fascination with fires; people who appeared to regularly show up at fire sites or arrive at sites before anyone else; people who often reported fires; people who had the time and opportunity to light fires and live or have been in close proximity to one or more bushfires; and vehicles sighted in fire locations at or near the time of a fire.
