LOCAL community members are being invited to submit to a national human rights consultation to be held in Bendigo today.Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre solicitor Paula Glassborow said the consultation was one of the most important regarding human rights for this generation.“It is essential that human rights are adequately protected in Australia,” she said.“It is important for the community to be engaged in debate relating to the state of human rights in Australia, and the Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre welcomes this opportunity and encourages the community to have their say.”Last year, on the 60th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Australia’s Federal Government launched the Human Rights Consultation. A committee chaired by Catholic priest and lawyer Father Frank Brennan was appointed to consult with the Australian community on three issues: which human rights and corresponding responsibilities should be protected and promoted; whether or not these human rights are sufficiently protected and promoted; and how Australia could better protect and promote human rights.“I believe everybody has the right to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their status in the community.” Ms Glassborow said. “I regularly see people whose rights have been trampled.”Bendigo residents who wish to become involved in today’s consultations are welcome to attend All Seasons Resort Bendigo from 12pm to 2pm.To register, visit www.humanrightsconsultation.gov.au
