POLICE have warned that the use of illegal fireworks in the Macedon Ranges is placing the region at severe risk of bushfire.
A small scrub fire in the Wombat State Forest last week was the sixth time police have responded to an incident involving fireworks in less than five months.
The CFA and Parks Victoria were called to the fire at 8am on November 12.
Police located a large quantity of fireworks on the road nearby and discarded in the bush, and investigations found the fireworks to be the cause of the blaze.
Police believe the people responsible for that fire attended the same area on November 7 or November 8 and ignited fireworks, blowing up a wheelie bin and causing a one-hectare fire.
Several other incidents involving fireworks have plagued police recently.
On November 10 about 2pm fireworks were detonated on the surface of Melbourne-Lancefield Road in Clarkefield.
On August 16 fireworks were used to cause two large explosions in Gormon Road and Coffey Road in Bullengarook.
Fireworks are also believed to be the cause of an explosion on a building site near an aged care facility in New Gisborne on June 27.
Gisborne police Senior Sergeant Ryan Irwin said the two most recent fires in the Wombat State Forest had the potential to cause a significant bushfire.
“The fireworks have been detonated in a highly volatile area that includes three townships (Woodend, Macedon and Mt Macedon), which have been included in the list of 52 towns deemed to be most at risk in Victoria,” he said.
“The person(s) responsible for these fires are placing the community at severe risk. We believe someone in the area will have knowledge of who is committing these acts and we urge those people to come forward.”
