MIRRIDONG nursing home residents are hoping a guilty conscience will ensure four special budgies are returned home.
Mirridong quality officer Vic Amato said residents were alerted to the birds’ disappearance last Friday morning when residents found some of their birds missing from an aviary at the McIvor Road residence.
“Someone has forced the door open,” he said.
The aviary was donated in 2008 by David Heritage, now deceased, so that his wife Carol could continue to enjoy the birds she loves.
“The three baby budgies and their father were taken,” Mr Amato said.
“We’ve had other residents bring in birds for the aviary.
“They’ve become part of our pet therapy program, which provides interaction and companionship for the residents.”
Mirridong resident John Whitewood looks after the birds and said he was very disappointed to see some were missing.
“I always make sure I give them some tucker and make sure they’re happy.
“It’s pretty upsetting.
“Lots of residents come out and talk and sing to them.”
Mr Amato said there were a number of residents who did a fantastic job looking after the birds.
“If anyone has any information, they should contact the police.
“We just want them back.
“There’ll be no questions asked.”
Anyone with any information is urged to contact Senior Constable Bill Fleming at Bendigo police on 5448 1300.
