Bombers split from Essendon

30 Sep, 2011 01:34 PM
The Bendigo Bombers will split from Essendon at the end of the 2012 VFL season.

The club made the announcement at its grand final eve business luncheon this afternoon at the All Seasons Quality Resort

While Essendon will have to apply for a licence, Bendigo will be allowed to go stand-alone in 2013 because it has a licence to play in the VFL for the next three years.

To be known as the Bendigo Football Club, the team will wear navy blue and gold uniforms in line with traditional Bendigo colours.

The team's nickname is still to be decided.

Essendon have disrespected Bendigo so much and this is the last straw. I hope all essendon fans from Bendigo find a new afl team to support. An absolute joke.

Great news for Bendigo to stand alone.

The people will be behind a real Bendigo team.

Not blow ins from Melbourne.

Again the Bendigo Bombers are succombing to the might of the Essendon hierarchy.

Why wait unti the end of the 2012 season to split from Essendon ? Now is the perfect time to make a stand, and show Essendon the respect they showed the people of Bendigo !!!.

About time Essendon brought nothing to the town.

Be great to have our own team like Ballarat has theirs.

Least everyone can enjoy the football and watch Bendigo play and not feel alienated if they dont barrack for the Bombers.

"The team's nickname is still to be decided"

Hope it's not "Diggers".

It's not an Army team.

Where will Bendigo play if QE Oval is declared unfit? Obviously there is little love between the two clubs, but in reality Bendigo will struggle without AFL support.

How soon we forget. Now we get to go back to the Diggers performances of 7 wins in 80 odd matches and certain loss of our VFL licence. Dis the Bombers all you like, but they saved us from oblivian, now with this decision, we have determined we will head straight back there. Poor form Bendigo.

Fantastic news!! Bendigo never needed Essendon anyway. I just hope the BFL and clubs stand behind this club now because it's the only way it will survive. All the best, Bendigo Football Club!!

Mmmmmmmmm.......

from years of past experience with Aussie Rules and Rugby League clubs, there is one thing that attracts followers to a teams games - WINS.

Gate money from home games is vital to 'football' clubs.

I hope for the future of the Bendigo VFL team that somehow its win - loss ratio can be improved.

Surely Essendon Football Club could part with say a modest $100,000 at least to the Bendigo club as a 'going away' present.

Essendon received a lot of publicity out of the 'Bendigo Bombers'. Plus using the team as a nursery for developing players. Any loyalty left I ponder?

No, Ballarat haven't got their own team. North Ballarat is aligned with North Melbourne.
