A MOTORIST with $70,000 of outstanding fines was caught in a police blitz in Castlemaine yesterday.
The man was one of 1500 motorists intercepted.
Although 707 warrants, worth $110,000, were executed, police praised motorists.
Police from Castlemaine and the Sheriff’s Office took part in the six-hour operation.
Senior Constable Grant Healey said 959 preliminary breath tests were conducted and a number of vehicles inspected.
One defect notice was issued, one motorist was caught for driving with a disqualified licence and a disqualified learner driver was also nabbed.
The Sheriff’s Office processed 28 offenders.
Senior Constable Healey said all traffic travelling inbound in Duke Street from 10am to 4pm was intercepted by police.
“It was a good day for us,” he said.
“Especially to have such a low number of offences.
“The majority of cars were in a reasonable condition.
“When you are dealing with that amount of traffic, you are looking for things that really stand out.
“It’s a small-scale project that we try to do four times a year.
“It also creates a very proactive perception to the public to see such a police presence.
“People pull up and say ‘it’s fantastic to see you here’.”
Senior Constable Healey said the blitz was a flow-on from operation Over The Hill in Ravenswood in May, which collected $100,000 worth of fines.
