BISHOP of Sandhurst Joseph Grech yesterday blessed two new plaques at Bendigo’s historic Sacred Heart Cathedral. Cathedral administrator Monsignor Frank Marriott said one plaque recognised the 153 years of the choir’s service, firstly at St Kilian’s until 1901, and then at the Sacred Heart Cathedral since then. He said the other plaque commemorated the service given to the community by the directors of music and the organists. “In one sense it’s particularly honouring the 30 years of service of John Hogan to the cathedral,’’ he said.John Hogan, who is Sacred Heart’s director of music and organist, said the plaques would give tourists a greater sense of the cathedral’s rich history. Mr Hogan said the plaques would also ensure this history wasn’t lost. He said the choir gathered with parishioners after the 11am mass for the short ceremony, before Bishop Grech officially opened the National Exhibition of Inspirational Australian Catholic Women. The free exhibition is open from 8am until 5pm each day until Wednesday.
