A MAJOR piece of engineering and logistics will be carried out today near Goornong as the final stages of a two-acre hay shed are made.
The giant shed at hay export company Gilmac’s Victorian base will be lifted off the ground by 15 cranes from 5am this morning in an operation that is expected to take up to eight hours.
Site manager Geoff Walker said most of the building had been built and the process was to allow for the legs to be finished.
“We build the sheds on the ground and lift them up on to the legs, which are attached and when lifted swing into place,” Mr Walker said.
“This is a lot bigger than any shed we have ever built before.
“It is part of expanding here and we want to get business cracking.”
Once built, the million-dollar shed will be one of the biggest of its type in Australia and will complement other Gilmac Hay centres in Western and South Australia.
The shed was built by companies from Kyneton and Swan Hill.
Mr Walker said Gilmac was hoping to store 60,000 tonnes of hay for export to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
The company is currently still sourcing hay.
The shed is located at the corner of Midland Highway and Comers Lane, about 1km from Goornong.
