ELEVEN granite pillars have mysteriously appeared on a vacant block of land close to the White Hills Botanic Gardens. The design of the pillars includes a focal point of a stone crossbeam.Locals said they just appeared, and believed they were the work of a student with knowledge of Stonehenge at Salisbury in the UK.Stonehenge was erected between 3000 BC and 1600 BC and its orientation on the rising and setting sun has always been one of its remarkable features. The name Stonehenge literally means “hanging stones” and is thought to originate from Anglo-Saxon times. In recent times, Bendigo had a series of moving sculptures built out of milk crates. Their perpetrator, Crate Man, wrote to The Advertiser saying he was departing the scene for a while. Is the White Hills Stonehenge another of his creations, or is the City of Bendigo home to other very creative minds? The weight of the quarried granite would suggest the White Hills stones have been placed by a team with knowledge and equipment from the stone masonry industry.
