 Bendigo UFO a YouTube hit

Bendigo UFO a YouTube hit

21 Apr, 2009 09:44 AM
A BRIGHT light that was spotted darting across the night sky has convinced a Bendigo man it could have been a UFO.

The man, who was enjoying a cuppa outside his Bendigo home last Tuesday evening, captured footage of the object on his video recorder and posted it on video-sharing website YouTube.

By yesterday afternoon the footage had been viewed more than 5000 times.

The man, who refers to himself on YouTube as wellsightedgentleman, noted that:”(I) just stepped outside this evening (Tuesday, April 14), enjoying a cuppa and this unidentifiable flying thing appears in the sky travelling steadily.

“I instantly ran inside and grabbed the HD video cam and captured what I could . . . I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

He said the peculiar object “tracked across the sky with a relative velocity moving in an arch from north to south . . . I really don’t know what this is.” Bendigo District Astronomical Society education officer Paul Foley said it was highly unlikely the object was an alien spacecraft.

“There are a lot of things in the sky which look pretty strange, that sometimes can’t be explained, but that’s not to say they’re alien,” he said.

“UFOs are not necessarily alien spacecrafts.” Mr Foley said the object could have been anything from a meteorite to a piece of a satellite that had burned up while re-entering the atmosphere.

“If there are aliens up their casing the earth with spacecrafts, they’re doing it in a really strange way. “If they really wanted to do something, they could land at half-time at the QEO on a Saturday,” he said.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Terry Ryan said Tuesday evening was a clear, dry night with north-westerly winds.

Police said they had received no reports of a UFO.

International Space Station...not a UFO. We time many evening outings to coincide with sighting opportunities for our location here in the US. Check the data in the Human Space Flight section of the NASA website - you will likely find that the ISS was visible from Bendigo at precisely the time and date this video was shot. The first time we ever saw this, we thought the same thing, and more so - the space shuttle had just undocked earlier that day, and both were gliding across the sky in unison with thousands of miles between them!

"If there are aliens up their casing the earth with spacecrafts, they’re doing it in a really strange way. “If they really wanted to do something, they could land at half-time at the QEO on a Saturday,” he said." That makes even less sense. Why create panic among people or put oneself in a position to be shot at?

http://www.heavens-above.com/gtrack.asp?date=39917.356171724 5&Session=kebgfgfnljolgebiifjknjan&satid=25544 will reveal the precise location of the ISS at the time: is that near Bendigo? nthrn NSW?

There's a terrific website for tracking this sort of satellite appearance stuff. Go to www.heavens-above.com You can put in your latitude and longitude and it will from then on compute exactly the passage of things like the ISS. For my place 20 km outside Bendigo it tells me that the ISS passed over from 6.42 pm to almost 6.47 pm on Feb14th, travelling from the NNW and disappearing ESE. Was that the cuppa tea time? The heights in degrees are given - it reached 46 which is quite high in the sky. Sounds like it - sorry about the aliens!

There were no fewer than 6 passing satellites, visible to the naked eye from Bendigo on Tuesday evening, including the ISS, Soyuz TMA-14, the UARS and the Lacross - 3 military satellite. Which is more likely? Aliens or a man-made object known to be passing.

I have seen satelites and the space station/shuttle pass before and they just don't glow like that object. It was also travelling too slowly to be a meteor. Try again debunkers.

Having just read 'paul foley's', letter to the editor on saterday i am intrigued by the idea that the mention of aliens in the article suggested a lack of intelligent life here on earth. When infact some of us are intelligent enough to see that it was Mr Foley himself who first mentioned "aliens", "casing the earth" in Mondays article. The wellsighted bendigonian is quoted saying '...i dont know what this is", whereas Mr Foley acknowledges '..strange things in the sky..not to say its an alien spacecraft..." who is to says its an alien spacecraft Mr Foley?. Needless to say, lets hope you will consider what YOU do say next time.
