Bendigo pokies spending rises

01 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM
Punters have injected more than $38 million into Bendigo’s poker machines since July last year.

Statistics released this week show the city’s poker machines swallowed more than $3.7 million in April.

Poker machines in Bendigo have consumed about $38.2 million since July 2010 – $1 million more than the previous year. The city’s highest spending was $46.5 million during the 2008-09 financial year.

In April, spending was almost $130,000 more than the same month last year.

Poker machine statistics for Bendigo show that for every month between August 2010 and April this year, the municipality’s machines swallowed more money than the same month a year earlier.

Punters injected more than $44 million into poker machines in the municipality during the 2009-10 financial year.

Bendigo’s poker machines swallowed $43 million during 2007-08 and $43.4 million during 2006-07.

There are 547 poker machines in the municipality.

The Foundry Hotel received permission earlier this year to install 30 poker machines.

And the State Labor Government when in power passed a law to allow more of these things into this fine city, I suppose it is another may of taxing those who use these things.

Time to bust the myth that recreational gamblers will not still use pokies if pre-commit and registration comes in for some poker machines. Online gamblers ALL must register etc and give bank ID as well as other ID...so why would any venue gambler go there instead of to a venue, if he disliked registering? Meanwhile we should reflect that gambling venues employ less than half the workers that other industries employ for the same money taken...so can we really afford pokies? NO..and nor can our families and responsible local traders! BAN pokies if it comes down to that!
