Bendigo officials recommend pokie application rejection

27 Jun, 2011 11:07 AM
City of Greater Bendigo officials have recommended councillors reject an application for 30 new poker machines at Bendigo Stadium.

Councillors will have a special meeting tonight.

"The anticipated economic and social impacts of the proposal will be detrimental to the municipal district," officers said in their recommendation to councilors.

"It has also been found that the proposal only satisfactorily meets two out of five of the decision making guidelines contained in the City of Greater Bendigo Gaming Policy."

Bendigo Stadium officials hoped to build a $9 million arena with revenue from 30 new pokies.

More to come.

The wishes of the locals MUST be treated as top priority, surely? It is an absolute nonsense that the gambling industry is allowed to ride roughshod over local wish and executive decision-making by using loopholes to get around it.

If our state government does not uphold local wish regarding a contentious topic like pokies....when there is an abundance of evidence that they harm communities, excepting it is ignored...then it is time to get rid of state governments and empower our local ones! SHAME Bailleau if you do not support your local councils here.

If you do not like the pokies do not play them. Simple. The same goes with alcohol, fast food, cigarettes, sugar and the list goes on. Just because the temptation is there does not mean you have to give in to it. People that are problem gamblers will find a way to bet. A few extra pokies will not make that much of a difference.

Yes Jonno, they are all legal but it does not mean that they are good for the unfortunate inept minority addicted to them. But they should fear not, they will always be in good supply as there is no shortage of people lining up to line their pockets from this sad 'list"as you say.

Sorry Libby the politicians are addicted to the pokie dollars, they were deathly silent when the council knocked back the Foundry's application and its subsequent appeal to VCAT. If these businesses do not like the council's decision they will take their application to a more favourable umpire.
