JACINTA Allan was one of the big winners when the Victorian Labor Party shuffled its shadow ministerial duties yesterday.
The Member for Bendigo East was given the Police and Emergency Services portfolio, which she will manage with her roles as manager of opposition business, opposition spokeswoman for regional and rural development, and bushfire response.
Her previous role as the head of roads was given to Luke Donnellan, member for Narre Warren North.
Ms Allan said she looked forward to “highlighting the important issues” surrounding police and emergency services through her new role.
“The issues of law and order have featured predominantly in this government’s first year,” Ms Allan said.
“The government has bungled the handling of a number of areas, including the roll-out of protective service officers at police stations and the crisis they created around the leadership of Victorian police.
“With regard to emergency services, this government has failed to adequately provide resources to the CFA to aid them with the important work they do with the community.”
Ms Allan, who is due to give birth to her first child in April, was confident she would be able to juggle work and motherhood.
“Whether they’re working in retail, work as a teacher or a nurse, women are juggling the family work balance and it’s no different for myself,” she said.
“It’s just one of those things that each family has to work out individually with what works for them.”
Ms Allan said the changes created a team that would work together to hold the government to account.
“We’re looking forward to working together... to represent the Victorian community who have become increasingly disillusioned with current government.”
