Bendigo housing crisis worsens

31 Oct, 2011 08:14 AM
BENDIGO’S housing crisis continues to worsen with 1174 people on the public housing waiting list for the September quarter.

The latest statistics released by the state government show the number of applicants on the waiting list has risen by 16 since the June quarter.

The increase is also reflected in the statistics for the Loddon Mallee region, which has jumped from 1867 to 1919 since June.

The total number of applicants increased by 562, or 1.5 per cent, from 38,244 in June 2011 to 38,806 across the state.

All regions recorded small increases except Gippsland, which fell by 0.3 per cent.

The rise comes after figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria showed the rental availability in Bendigo dropped from 0.7 per cent in May to 0.5 per cent in June.

Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell said changes in quarterly waiting list numbers were affected by a number of factors.

“Changes in waiting list numbers are generally a reflection of underlying economic and social factors such as rent levels in the private market – including in regional centres – the number of affordable homes, changes in economic circumstances, job availability and demographic changes,” she said.

“The state government is working to improve access and outcomes for Victorians who need housing assistance, which is why we are currently developing a new housing framework for social housing and delivering work and learning centres to five public housing estates.

“We have also recently announced our $76.7 million Victorian Homelessness Action Plan 2011-2015, which includes an innovative approach to addressing homelessness for the most vulnerable Victorians.”

When I read of long waiting lists for public housing I have no pity anymore, as from my experience with the majority of those who are waiting a long time on public housing lists in regional areas, it is mainly because no private rent lists will accept some or a lot of these people due to past behavior that is not very nice in private and public housing, in other words there are those on the list that don't deserve any accommodation that comes with a large risk that they will inflict mental and physical damage on neighbourhoods and property.

I totally agree with you @OK hey. Time has come that those in need, the vulnerable are put at the top of these housing lists, instead of housing families/individuals that are hell bent on causing chaos for all in their path. Too many times, homes, some brand new are given to those that have track records in demolition, whilst we have those vulnerable families left out in the cold to wait for their number to come up. This has to be stopped in its tracks as it benefits no-one, including those that destroy properties.

there is a vacant house next door to me, its been vacant for 3 months now with housing doing nothing about cleaning it up and giving it to a family in need, i pity the guys who have to go into some of these houses and clean them up, considering the mess that is left

OK hey and Bree are correct. I am a community worker and have witnessed the destruction of these houses. No consequence to their actions just adds to the problem. If I were a landlord I would be fussy too. Put people with real needs at the top of the list.

What ok hey says is so true but not only in Bendigo, the same applies in Shepparton and probably many other places. I feel sorry for the genuine people.

annie, 31/10/2011, I have posted many times, that if the Ministry of Housing were more effective in the timely renovating / refurbishing of vacant property, that would assist in minimising part of the problem. This situation has gone on for decades. Labor failed too.

Of course funding is an issue. Pressure needs to be brought on both local lower house Labor MP's and upper house National member, Damian Drum, for some urgent action with more funding, and a darn good shake up within Ministry of Housing.

Editor, could the Addy please investigate and report re numbers of vacant properties.

We can't just blame 'authority' Colin. I tend to agree with other comments here, the continued disrespect by some for a roof is causing the greatest woes for existing housing and putting new investors off. And in terms of vacancies - There are many resources available to you in terms of vacancy rates. Across the board (all rentals) rates have ranges between .01 and 1.5% over the last 5 years. This figure is one of the lowest in Australia.

Stewart, 1/11/2011, yes there are many issues.

However, matters I have raised were properly investigated, and Ministry of Housing responded accurately, I am confident my claims would prove to be accurate.

Please be assured - there was no question of the accuracy of claims. We just can't continue to blame authority. It's the easiest and least productive thing to do.
