 BENDIGO HOTEL PUSHES FOR CASINO

BENDIGO HOTEL PUSHES FOR CASINO

14 Nov, 2009 06:05 AM
THE owner of the historic Shamrock Hotel wants to build a multi-million dollar casino at the venue.

The boutique casino would feature several gaming tables and cater for about 200 people.

Shamrock Hotel owner Jim Hogan said a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal decision to ban pokies at one of his other hotels had forced him to reconsider his investments.

Mr Hogan lost a five-year battle to install electronic gaming machines in the Romsey Hotel on Thursday following strong opposition from residents of the small town.

He said the $5 million he planned to spend on the venue would now be invested at the Shamrock Hotel and the Wallan Hotel.

“I’m going to apply for a casino licence for the hotel,” Mr Hogan said.

“This will draw people from Melbourne and all over Australia.

“It will be a big drawcard for Bendigo.

“It’s not going to be a big casino, but it will certainly mesh well with the current direction of Bendigo tourism.”

Mr Hogan said the casino would be modelled on intimate European casinos.

He said Crown Casino would lose exclusive rights as Victoria’s only casino in the next two years.

Mr Hogan did not rule out a High Court challenge to VCAT’s verdict regarding the Romsey Hotel. He will meet with his legal team on Monday.

“Myself, the lawyers and everyone else in the industry was certainly surprised with the judgement,” Mr Hogan said.

“It’s a test case and it certainly changes the landscape for gaming.

“It extends to planning as well as gaming, it really has far-reaching ramifications.

“I wouldn’t expect to see any new venues popping up for a while.

“But it just means that I’ve now got money available to spend on my other venues.”

Jim should spend money in his own pokie pubs venues in adopting the measures recently recommended by the Productivity Commission. These recommendations focus on reducing the harm caused to addicted gamblers. Hard Victorian government evidence now shows that his recreational gamblers won't be affected by these measures. Instead of whining about the Romsey decision, he could be showing Bendigo real leadership in truly reducing the harm of his Shamrock Hotel pokie gambling business.

Last thing Bendigo needs, well done Romsey. but watch the gutless council approve it.

No matter what Mr Hogan believes, a casino in Bendigo will NOT draw people all over Australia. I doubt it would even draw more than a handful of Melbournites to its pleasures. Why not? Because these days, no-one has to travel hundreds (if not thousands) of kilometers to visit a casino. Gamblers don't see the point in forking out good gambling money on expensive travel costs when they can gamble just a few kms from home and - at the same time - avoid having to fork out yet more gambling money to pay for a hotel room. The research is clear, most gambling occurs within 10km of the gamblers home.

Dream on. As if conservative Bendigo will let that happen. All the screams from the do gooders will be too loud. I think it’s a great idea.

Casino in Bendigo, pokies in Romsey. Seems to me that Jim Hogan wishes to invest in the gambling losses of people who can least afford it. The thought of Bendigo's grandest hotel becoming yet another depressing gaming venue is quite disappointing.

Good luck with it Jim, if you need to do this to survive at the shamrock, then why not . At least we will have one more thing to keep the tourists in Bendigo as most of the shop keeps won't even open on a Sunday, the tourist's say to themselves what a dull hole this is. Good on ya!

Not a good idea. And what about the crime problems that come with a casino - Bob Cameron can;t give us enough police now to handle weekends. So what would it be like if a casino opened? There are better, quality ways to bring visitors to the city and create jobs.

Jim Hogan Bendigo does not need anymore gambling venues at all, we have enough problem gamblers in Bendigo now without you wanting to give Bendigo a bigger problem. As for your hotel in Romsey being knocked back by VCAT for a gaming licence for poker machines in your hotel, why can't you accept that decision, because that decision was made because that is what the majority of the people of Romsey wanted. For someone to not accept that decision and still wanting to proceed further with the issue through the High Court just goes to show that one is only interested in money and could not care less about the people of Romsey, it is called pure greed.

This would certainly be good for Mr Hogan, but would it be good for Bendigo?
