 Bendigo Hospital lures global giants

Bendigo Hospital lures global giants

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
TWO global construction conglomerates are vying to build Bendigo’s new $630 million hospital.

The state government this week told two consortia they were on the shortlist to deliver the project.

Intecare, comprising John Laing, Theiss, Royal Bank of Scotland and Theiss Services, and Exemplar, comprising Capella, Lend Lease, Siemens and Spotless Services, are on the shortlist.

Both consortia will supply the government with their vision’s for the hospital.

“The detailed request for tender documents are now being finalised, which set out the government’s detailed specifications for a state-of-the-art facility,” Victorian Health Minister David Davis said yesterday.

“The government is now looking to the shortlisted consortia to deliver their vision and designs for this facility which will meet the health needs of the people of Bendigo and surrounding areas.”

Global giants Lend Lease and Theiss are at the centre of the two bids.

Both companies have previously received Victorian government contracts and have built billion-dollar developments across the globe.

The Bendigo Advertiser contacted Lend Lease and Theiss yesterday. Representatives at both companies said they were unable to comment on the matter.

The new Bendigo hospital development will be the largest project in regional Victoria’s history.

Mr Davis said the project would create hundreds of jobs and offer a boost to Bendigo’s economy.

“This exciting project will create at least 735 construction industry and supply chain jobs providing a welcome stimulus to the local Bendigo economy,” he said.

“At least 500 of these jobs will be maintained for at least three years during the peak construction period for the hospital.”

The expressions of interest to design, build and manage the hospital under a public private partnership closed in September last year.

The government had said it would announce a shortlist of bidders in November last year.

But undisclosed delays held up the announcement of a shortlist until this week.

The government will announce its preferred bidder later this year.

Construction of the hospital is due to start in December and finish in 2016.

Does mean we are actually getting our hospital now?

I wonder what our local members will have to say about this now since they said it would never happen.

What a tremendous announcement. Disappointed that Jacinta and Marie aren't mentioned as welcoming and supporting this great step forward. Go the new hospital.

"I wonder what our local members will have to say..."

They'll probably whinge about which day in December the work is to begin. Anything to talk down the project.

You can hear them now. "Under Labor the hospital build would have started on Tuesday afternoon, not Thursday morning like it is under the Coalition – shame Ted, shame."

And they’ll be sure to blame Tony Abbott for something too.

ratepayer, the Liberal and Nationals didn't support this Hospital until the start of the 2010 election campaign, prior to that they thought a new Bendigo Hospital was a waste of money. How vehemently opposing something can be changed at the drop of a hat to supporting a new hospital for the sake of chasing votes. I wonder if Michael Langdon when running for the Libs had anything to do with it, seeing as he ran against it and is now the CEO of Bendigo Health.

Good opportunity to make some money for rental properties. Could the Addy look into how the city is going to house all the workers - especially while there is a low rental vacancy ratio currently in the city. Will this mean that the low income earners may have to live in the streets.

Other than that Bravo for improving the health facilities in Bendigo.

The silence is deafening!

By George, get the facts straight. Check back through Addy and you will see Liberals did not oippose a new hospital just wanted the best for Bendigo (and not the cheaper Labor model). And as for Michael Langdon, you told John Mulder he is no longer CEO at the hospital? Hope not as he still is. Langdon is chairman of board. Besides those few corrections George, hope you consider joining the community voices of cheer that hospital is moving ahead.

Cgull you seem very negative! If you did a little research you would see they are encouraging the winning bidder to use local businesses, all those people hired to work on the hospital, where do you think they will live, eat and shop during construction?

This will be great for Bendigo!

cgull you seem to be very unaware of how this all works? There would not be anyone large enough in Bendigo to undertake this sort of project.

They need to be these large consortiums with banks backing them up and if you look at what these 2 bidders have built gives me confidence at how great our new hospital will be. The benefit to Bendigo business will be through the use of local suppliers, then they will need somewhere to eat and shop and live.
