Bendigo councillors to vote on major developments

    Update

A PROPOSED Wills Street development has won the support of City of Greater Bendigo staff.

A report to Wednesday’s council meeting has recommended councillors grant a planning permit to build a four storey multi-use complex.

The report states that the development meets the council’s development strategies and a car park waiver could be offset with sustainable transport options.

As the Bendigo Advertiser previously reported, two objections were lodged with the council.

The objections included fears of overshadowing and a loss of privacy.

Consultation between the developers and the concerned residents resulted in the removal of the formal objections.

Meanwhile, a report to council has presented three options for a Kangaroo Flat aquatic centre.

The first option would cost $25.8 million for a 25 metre pool and the closure of Kangaroo Flat, Long Gully and Golden Square swimming pools. It will also include construction of a Long Gully aquatic playspace.

The second option would be similar to option one except with a 50 metre pool and cost $28.97 million.

The third option would $28.8 million and would be the same as option one but also include a lagoon pool at White Hills Botanical Gardens.

TWO large-scale developments will go before City of Greater Bendigo councillors this week.

The Bendigo Advertiser believes councillors will decided on a proposed $12 million private development in Wills Street.

  • Sources have said the project had received two objections but both had since been removed.

Developers hope to build a multistorey complex between Edward and Mitchell streets.

The development would feature ground-floor retail outlets and laneway cafes and office space on the second floor.

The top two levels would include two- and three-bedroom apartments.

The council voted at its last meeting to approve a similar development for the corner of Mitchell and Mollison streets.

That development, which Bendigo’s Scott Jackman is involved in, has retail and office spaces and apartments.

The Wills Street development seeks to provide a link between the Marketplace and Hargreaves Mall.

The development would have basement car parking.

The Bendigo Advertiser believes the council meeting will also debate a proposed Kangaroo Flat pool. The community launched a vocal campaign and submitted a petition with almost 3000 signatures urging the council to build a 50-metre pool.

Estimates have suggested the 50-metre pool could cost up to $4 million more than a 25-metre pool.

Upgrades for Eaglehawk’s indoor pool will also inflict a financial burden on the council this year.

Council staff have said the centre could need millions of dollars worth of repairs done.

The council will today release the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting.

Big decisions for council and future of city. And to think one or two were more interested in pouring millions and millions into a silly beach idea.

Build another 50m pool for Bendigo and do it soon!

Bendigo really needs another aquatic centre that is competition standard to take some pressure off the Eaglehawk centre.

The Councillors need to see for themselves just how busy Peter Krenz is during school hours and after 4pm.

"The second option would be similar to option one except with a 50 metre pool and cost $28.97 million.."

So a 25 metre pool costs $25 million - double the size of the pool and it’s $28.7 million – an extra $3.7 million for another 25 metres.

So for an investment which is far less than the cost of the silly beach proposal killed off by council last week the proposed pool for Kangaroo Flat will be able to meet the needs of far more residents than the 25 metre proposal could service.

Sounds like a plan. Get on with it.

Good looking project but under the current planning scheme requirement for this building they need 142 car parks and there will only have 28 and under the Bendigo Parking Strategy Requirement proposed rate they need 75 but they are only going to supply 28, why?

I recall Dan Murphy and the trouble they had because they were 6 car spaces short.

Talk out double standards within this council.

Why have set guidelines if you don't use them, or are there just in case someone comes along and you want to make it hard for them and you "use" the rules to suit?

It is typical of this council.

The $28million would be better spent on upgrading existing pools.

Including the 3 marked for closure.

Very different operation to DM's, Robert.

There's not much point citing planning scheme requirements. They are only "should" requirements and can be waived depending on the proposal which in this case looks O.K to occur.

Parking is the biggest impact factor on these kinds of development. i just hope council support them and reduce the requirements where they can.

The 50 metre pool at the K Flat Leisure centre is a great idea;K Flat is growing so quickly and desperately needs it.Why not enclose the Bendigo Aquatic Centre's 50 metre pool;cheap and a asset to our great city centre.

How many people use pools other than the warmer months???

Up grade the existing pools at Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square and Long Gully, with spending just a few million dollars sounds more likes common sense for a change.

Just look at the Arts the Council is hell bent on spending millions on another theatre in the old jail, when the Capital Theatre is under used.

What percentage of Bendigo rateyers use the Capital Theatre???

When this theatre is built, who will pay the up keep and the running costs the ratepayers of Bendigo..

Why should a few ratepayers be expect the rest to pay?
