The positive feedback that the college has received from the article published in the Bendigo Advertiser on Saturday March 19 for our World War II honour board has been fantastic.
We would like to thank the many people who have contacted the college and provided us with updated information of these students and additional names.
The first mention of a memorial for students from Bendigo High School who served in World War II was made in the 1945 edition of the college magazine Old Gold.
A memorial fund was established and in 1957 the memorial steps leading from Rosalind Park to the entrance of the college were opened.
Today, the steps have become the most recognised image of the college. Every Anzac Day, students, staff and visitors ascend the steps at the conclusion of the college Anzac ceremony.
In recent years a number of people approached the college and our alumni organisation, Old Gold Bendigo Inc, suggesting
that the college produce a traditional wooden World War II honour board, to be hung in the James King Hall alongside the World War I
honour boards.
We were very supportive of the idea but it has been no easy task to compile a list.
Jean Capuano, who took on the difficult task of tracing as many ex-students as possible, found one of our students, who was born in South Africa, enlisted as a soldier in Western Australia and in between, attended Bendigo High School.
Jean has cross-checked each name and the service with the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour.
In acknowledgement, she has been awarded Honorary Life Membership by Old Gold Bendigo Inc for the years spent undertaking the immeasurable research to obtain the names to be included on the Bendigo Senior Secondary College World War II Honour Board.
Now, almost 66 years after the end of World War II, Bendigo Senior Secondary College has transferred these names to a traditional wooden honour board which will become an integral part of our college history.
The list of names has continued to grow since it was first released in electronic format during the 2007 centenary.
While the list may never be complete, it now contains more than 350 names and it is fitting that the college recognises their service.
On Wednesday, following the college Anzac ceremony, the new honour board will be unveiled.
The college community is very excited that some of the individuals to be included on the World War II honour board, and their family members, have indicated their desire to join with our current students to mark this occasion.
A list of the names of the people who will be honoured on the board appears on the Bendigo Advertiser website at www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au
