BENDIGO’S state secondary schools were put on show during a community open day at the town hall yesterday.
The event, hosted by Bendigo’s five state secondary colleges, allowed parents and the community the opportunity to gain an insight into the modern-day classroom.
The day-long event saw students and staff assisting visitors during their visit.
The open day covered a range of activities, including interactive workshops, short student films, new teaching technologies and virtual learning, music and dance performances, art and fashion displays and energy-efficient vehicles created by students.
Participating schools were Eaglehawk, Bendigo South East, Crusoe, Weeroona and Bendigo Senior Secondary colleges.
Retired teacher and tutor Julie Spurling said she was surprised by how much the classroom had changed.
Mrs Spurling, who spent 25 years teaching in Melbourne and Bendigo schools, said technology and collaboration between secondary schools were now leading the way.
“In my day, classrooms were just a single teacher in front of a classroom of students.
“But that’s all changed.
“These days there can be more than one staff member assisting students, and technology is also playing a lead role in communication and teaching practices.”
