Bendigo Buddhist monument taking shape

10 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM
City of Greater Bendigo councillors tried their hand as property inspectors when they toured the site of Buddhist monument yesterday.

The civic leaders were on a guided tour of The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion at Myers Flat. Contractors have built the frame for six levels of the monument, which will ultimately be 50 metres wide and almost 50 metres high.

A stupa is the most sacred building in Buddhism and the Myers Flat offering will be the largest in the Western world once finished. Project directors expect it will take three to four years to construct and fit out the bottom half of the stupa, which is about 20 metres high at present.

Cr Alex Sandner said the stupa would boost Bendigo tourism.

Lets hope so Cr Sander as the council did go guarantor to the tune of millions of dollars a few years ago and if it goes belly up we will all be paying.

Since it has taking so long to build and will to finish, do they have to keep applying for extentions to their building permit like the rest of us?

Good! Good! Good news.

Councillors, play property inspectors

as you will - just make sure COGB ratepayers money does not get 'invested' into The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion.

Though maybe the Buddhists could pray for ratepayers to be delivered from the money splurging and city central development intentions of COGB.

Nothing else seems to be working.

Maybe in time we will see a 'wise Buddhist' elected to council. For as the Buddhists are aware of compassion - that appears to be foreign to most councillors in regards to 'milking' ratepayers of money.

Thanks for turning Bendigo into the city for false gods.

As a Western Buddhist, I have to say it is nice to see something like this being built.
