Bendigo airport plan on table

11 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
BENDIGO civic leaders could decide the location of a new airport runway within months.

Victorian Aviation Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips yesterday visited Bendigo to reaffirm his government’s $5 million commitment for a Bendigo Airport redevelopment.

A report will go to the council recommending proposed redevelopment options.

Once the councillors adopt a vision, council staff will seek funding and designs for the new-look airport.

“We’ve been working on the redevelopment for a long time,” said City of Greater Bendigo chief executive officer Craig Niemann.

“We have got a number of options on the table about where to put the runway and how much it costs and the complications about the ease of delivering that project.

“It is significant dollars but what it does is gives us a step forward to say ‘we have got that part of the funding tied up; how much can the council commit to the project and what other funding can we get from the federal government and other sources?’

“If we can pull all that together, it certainly moves the project forward in terms of delivery,” he said.

State and local government officials attended the launch of a $20 million Regional Aviation Fund.

Bendigo’s $5 million, which was a Coalition election promise, will come from the fund.

The council hopes to create a business park at the airport.

It would have to install a sewerage system, upgrade the electricity supply and change planning conditions.

Mr Niemann said upgrading the airport would benefit existing businesses in Bendigo, while attract others to the city.

Once again we have a half-baked major project. Please tell us Mr. Niemann what are the various options and their costs and benefits. And maybe you could also tell us which airlines will use an upgraded airport and what will be their destinations and aircraft.

Further, please tell us what marketing studies have been done on the proposed industrial park.

These are all questions which switched-on councillors would ask.

If the Council's Hargreaves Mall project is anything to go by this will take five years to build, cost three times the original budget and wind up as a facility somewhat worse than the present one.

Neil, the lights are on but unfortunately no one is home within the COGB.

C'mon, where are all the whingers putting forward the option of saving money on the airport, and instead landing planes in the mall.

I totally agree with Neil Clark's assessment of what needs to be asked and what reviews if any have come up with viable solutions. I first raised the need for an airport upgrade in 2003 and it was reported by Damian Drum MP in State Parliament. Back then with the NE Fires emergency CFA strike teams had to be sent by bus to Mangalore then flown to Canberra, then a 3 hr bus trip to Delegate River. A larger properly constructed runway would allow not only larger commercial planes but deployment in/out of Bendigo of emergency services personnel in times of disasters saving much time and angst.

Neil i think that every one will be thinking the same thing as U said I think the councils need to think is it worth having a new air strp or airport which it already has one

So they want to keep the airport close to the city - so the suburbs around will need to suffer not only increased air traffic but also larger aircraft.

Just move it out of town a little. Obviously the councillors do not live underneath the flight path or do not own any land that they want to sub divide in this area (of course not)!
