PREPARATIONS are under way for what may be the biggest party Bendigo has seen.
Bendigo Bank's 150th celebrations will include three events next week that are expected to attract about 2000 people.
The hub of activity will be a purpose-built marquee at the Charing Cross end of Rosalind Park.
Work started yesterday on erecting the Rosalind Park big top, which will be 65m long and 19m wide, reaching a height of five metres at its centre.
Melbourne company The Marquees People is transporting up to 50 tonnes of equipment and taking about 600 employee hours to erect the structure.
Company owner Hamish Little said it would take a team of 11 men two days to construct the huge tent.
Nine lighting technicians will be at work later in the week, followed by a team of eight at the weekend who will furnish the marquee.
More than 400 candles will illuminate the marquee by night.
"This would be as extravagant as a corporate marquee in Melbourne," Mr Little said.
Raised timber floors and carpet would protect the Rosalind Park grass, and a separate 10m by 20m marquee would be erected for catering.
Mr Little was untroubled by yesterday's squally weather.
The marquee's design allows it to withstand winds of 115kmh.
"We put our marquees up to stay up," Mr Little said.
Abbotsford caterer Damm Fine Food will prepare almost 900 meals with a staff of 27 cooks.
Up to 40 waiters will ensure the banking crowd is well provisioned.
A gathering of 600 community bank leaders will kick off the celebrations in the marquee next Tuesday night.
On Wednesday a special edition of The Advertiser will carry a 28-page history of Bendigo Bank.
More than 600 Bendigo Bank staff will gather in the marquee for a cocktail party next Thursday night, and a free community day will be held on the Friday.
Bendigo Bank negotiated the use of Rosalind Park with the City of Greater Bendigo.
The bank will hold its gala dinner in Bendigo Town Hall on Wednesday night.
Reserve Bank of Australia governor Glenn Stevens will give a speech.
