A MAN accused of robbing the Long Gully Post Office and entering a Castlemaine house and tying up its occupants with an electrical cord has been released on bail.Greg Gus Paavola, 36, appeared in Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday.Police opposed the bail application, saying the accused represented an unacceptable risk of not answering bail.Paavola is facing seven charges, including armed robbery and aggravated burglary, in relation to two crimes. He was extradited from South Australia on August 19.The court heard that Paavola had a “raging” amphetamine habit and needed money to pay off drug debts when he allegedly committed the crimes.Paavola lived in Daylesford before moving to Port Lincoln in April.“I never moved to South Australia to avoid police,” he told the court.“I was going to lose my relationship with my de facto partner and I couldn’t get employment in Daylesford, so I decided to clean up my act.“I rang around and got a job in Port Lincoln.”Paavola’s lawyer, Russell Kelly, told the court that his client was the main breadwinner in the family, providing for his partner and two of her children.Magistrate Richard Wright said he was satisfied that Paavola had shown cause, and he noted the applicant’s concern for the welfare of his family.“I know I’m going to be doing some time for what I’ve done - I want to get my affairs sorted,” Paavola said.He will appear in Bendigo Magistrates Court on October 14 for a committal hearing.
