Attempt to evade police leads to fine

04 Jul, 2009 10:10 AM
AN unlicensed driver who led police on a high-speed chase through residential streets in an unregistered car has been fined.

Tony Mark Valli reached speeds of 100kmh when he fled police on February 27.

The 28-year-old, who represented himself at Bendigo Magistrates Court on Thursday, was charged with speeding, failing to affix correct numberplates, driving while unlicensed, driving an unregistered vehicle and failing to stop on police request.

Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Dave Somerton told the court Valli had been out buying cigarettes at 5am when police attempted to intercept him.

He accelerated through streets in Eaglehawk, often at speeds of 100kmh in 60km zones, the court heard.

Police lost sight of Valli during the chase, but eventually apprehended him as he arrived at his Eaglehawk home.

The court was told that during an interview at Bendigo police station, Valli admitted never holding a licence and that the registration on the car had expired more than six months earlier.

He also admitted he was using the numberplates from a relative’s car.

Valli told police he didn’t stop because he was scared.

“It was stupid of me to do it,” he told the court.

Magistrate Tim McDonald ordered that Valli’s learner’s permit, which he obtained after the offences, be suspended for six months. Valli was convicted and fined $900.
