A Melbourne man who ransacked a Long Gully home to feed his heroin habit has been sentenced to three months in jail.
Rodney Hill, 40, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary in the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday.
He appeared via video link from Fulham Prison, where he is serving a sentence for other theft and burglary charges.
The court was told Hill stole $3000 in items from a Long Gully home in March last year.
The items included video games, a PlayStation console, mobile phones and a video camera.
Prosecuting, Leading Senior Constable Mark Snell said Hill did not make any admissions when he was later arrested by police in Heidelberg and said he didn’t even know where Long Gully was.
Leading Senior Constable Snell said Hill admitted to having blank periods when he was on heroin.
“He said he was a heroin addict and used two to three caps a day,” Leading Senior Constable Snell said.
He said substantial evidence linked Hill to the burglary.
“His fingerprints were found on the bathroom window frame, the point of entry to the house,” Leading Senior Constable Snell said.
“A shoe print was also found which matched shoes the accused was wearing at the time of his arrest.”
Magistrate Ian von Einem said it was obvious Hill’s long list of burglary and theft offences were a result of his heroin addiction.
He sentenced Hill to three months’ jail, to be served on top of his current sentence.
“I had in mind six months but I will halve that because of your plea of guilty,” he said.
