BENDIGO school students got into the anarchist spirit at a living history re-enactment at Rosalind Park yesterday. Bendigo Historical Society members Norm Harris and Jim Evans led a re-enactment of the famous Red Ribbon protest with the help of 150 Camp Hill Primary School students. Mr Evans said it was great to see the kids get excited about local history. He said the Red Ribbon protest occurred in 1853 when Bendigo miners, disputing government license fees, surrounded Camp Hill. The miners wore a red ribbon as a symbol of their protest, and were supported by local shopkeepers who put red ribbons up in their shops.“The commissioners didn’t collect money for the September licences so it was considered a big win for the miners,” Mr Evans said.
