Teen gives no reason for Jackass Flat house damage

14 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A Bendigo teenager could give no reason for his involvement in the robbery and trashing of a house in Jackass Flat last year, a Children’s Court has heard.

The 14-year-old has been charged with robbery and criminal damage in relation to the incident which caused more than $22,500 in damages.

Prosecuting, Leading Senior Constable Mark Herman said the boy, who has plead guilty, and his friend attended the Jackass Flat property about 4.30pm on November 6 last year.

Leading Senior Constable Herman said the boys smashed seven of the house’s windows and stole a 50-inch television.

He said graffiti tags were sprayed along cupboards, including the accused’s initials.

“There was significant damage to the carpet, furniture and the curtains,” he said.

“There was in excess of $22,500 in damages... The accused’s fingerprints were found on a coffee table and on a spray can left inside the house.”

Leading Senior Constable said a witness photographed the boys leaving the house, but when the 14-year-old was arrested he denied any involvement and was verbally abusive to police.

The boy’s defence lawyer Clare Vierboom said her client was unable to give any explanation for his actions.

“He was not affected by drugs or alcohol at the time,” she said. “I can only imagine there was some peer pressure on each other.”

Ms Vierboom said the boy was not currently attending school, but was looking at part-time education options.

She asked Magistrate Bruce Cottrill to defer the matter for a youth justice report to be compiled.

Mr Cottrill agreed and adjourned the case to April 2 for a children’s court clinic report and a pre-sentence report to be carried out.
