CBD divided over plans to reform Bendigo Traders Association

02 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE resurgence of the Bendigo Traders Association has been met with mixed reactions from the business community.

Some traders said they were in desperate need of a united voice and representation, while others couldn’t have cared less.

The Bendigo Traders Association will meet on February 8 after seven months in hibernation.

Collier’s Shoes store manager Marita McArthur said Hargreaves Mall traders needed greater support.

“I think the traders have missed the BTA,” she said.

“My concern is that nothing seems to be happening in the mall. There was nothing here at Christmas time, not even any music.

“It was very dull and boring and I’m wondering if it will be the same story at Easter.

“We need something to bring people here and having the BTA will give us a united voice.”

Saxi Girl Boutique owner Vicki Davies said Killian’s Walk needed more advertising.

Ms Davies said she was still making up her mind about the reformation of the BTA, but would probably get involved if its fees were discounted.

Favourite Flavours owner Steve Virtue said he would be interested to know what the general public thought about renewal of the BTA.

“I think council removing the support of the Bendigo traders was probably the most tragic move that’s been made in the last 10 years,” he said.

“For Bendigo to grow and be prosperous it needs the support of the traditional trading groups.”

Former BTA executive officer Nic Bannan said that although there wouldn’t be funds on hand to stage events, the group could take on an advocacy role.

Cautious not to jump the gun prior to traders meeting on the 8th, but the only way this group can have a successful role is through positivity and communication with the councillors.

Constant bagging out rebranded as 'advocating' just doesn't get anyone anywhere. The CBD is the future of bendigo, promote it with excitement and flare - show the people of bendigo what you have to offer! not what you think is wrong about it.

Traders may not have done anything extra for Christmas but it I do remember the young musicians busking in the Mall, adding music and atmosphere and using their initiative.

Hayley, 2/02/2012 8:21:39 AM,

Depends what we call the CBD, even the council has different boundaries for different things in relation to what they want to call the CBD.

What area do you call the CBD?

I don't think the parametres of the CBD have ever been debated. it is bounded by Chapel St, Pall Mall, the Train line, Arthur St and a pocket surround the cinemas. The CBD area has been explicitly defined since the CBD plan was done by council. see the webpage http://www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/News_and_Information/Publications/Documents_listing/CBD_Plan

Good luck traders on the 8th and may it be the start of a new approach to managing business!
