THE resurgence of the Bendigo Traders Association has been met with mixed reactions from the business community.
Some traders said they were in desperate need of a united voice and representation, while others couldn’t have cared less.
The Bendigo Traders Association will meet on February 8 after seven months in hibernation.
Collier’s Shoes store manager Marita McArthur said Hargreaves Mall traders needed greater support.
“I think the traders have missed the BTA,” she said.
“My concern is that nothing seems to be happening in the mall. There was nothing here at Christmas time, not even any music.
“It was very dull and boring and I’m wondering if it will be the same story at Easter.
“We need something to bring people here and having the BTA will give us a united voice.”
Saxi Girl Boutique owner Vicki Davies said Killian’s Walk needed more advertising.
Ms Davies said she was still making up her mind about the reformation of the BTA, but would probably get involved if its fees were discounted.
Favourite Flavours owner Steve Virtue said he would be interested to know what the general public thought about renewal of the BTA.
“I think council removing the support of the Bendigo traders was probably the most tragic move that’s been made in the last 10 years,” he said.
“For Bendigo to grow and be prosperous it needs the support of the traditional trading groups.”
Former BTA executive officer Nic Bannan said that although there wouldn’t be funds on hand to stage events, the group could take on an advocacy role.
