A VISITING Californian priest has delivered a $25,000 donation to help the people of Bendigo’s bushfire recovery effort.Anglican Bishop Andrew Curnow, and community chaplain for the Anglican Diocese Tracey Wolsley, welcomed Father Tony Nobel from All Saints’ Episcopal Church in San Diego yesterday, when he visited “Our Place” - a community support centre in Eaglehawk. After hearing of the devastating fires in Bendigo and across Victoria, Fr Nobel, who originates from Adelaide and is a long-time friend of Bishop Curnow, decided he needed to do something to help. With the aid of his San Diego parish, Fr Nobel raised $25,000 for the centre.“San Diego . . . has had a long history with wildfires and a number of my parishioners have lost homes and been affected by fires, so they were very concerned when they heard about the bushfires in Bendigo,” he said. It’s been a tough few months for the people in Eaglehawk who lost homes, properties and belongings in the Black Saturday bushfires, but since then the Our Place community centre has become a place of hope and support to hundreds of people.Bishop Curnow said the money would be used to employ Ms Wolsley full-time, and to equip the Our Place with furniture and other items.
